I would like to thank you for the wonderful Business and Life Coaching that you offered to me over the last six months in my role as Practice manager, in a very busy Orthopaedic Surgeon’s practice, and wife and mother of five. I am very grateful to you for having helped me in various areas of both my personal and business life, and you have given me the balance and resources that I needed to excel in my goals.
I first approached you in regards to helping me to implement strategies to improve the workplace having recently employed a new staff member to replace a long standing employee who had passed away suddenly and had left an enormous hole in our staff. I had previously spoken with you in regards to my concern that the new staff member was not the correct person for the job, and that I had little time to improve, or replace her, due to me requiring an extended time off on sick leave. You were able to assist me in implementing strategies and helping with my communication with both employees, to ensure that both I, and my employer, were confident that the everyday running of the practice would continue, and that I would not need to concern myself with work related issues whilst recovering from my health issue.
Jim, you have left me with a better understanding of my role as Practice manager, and also strategies to continue to get the best out of my staff. They/we are happy in the workplace, and both my employer and I are confident that our Practice will continue to improve in work efficiency and employee satisfaction as a result of your tutoring.

“Deep down I Knew the things I needed to do”
The following is an interview with tony plant of Carry on Catering:
Tony’s business was a small mobile catering business, his market being on site weddings and other functions
Tony took on Coaching at a time when he was unsure of his future direction.
What did you get from coaching?
“At the time I had 3 things I was totally over; the business and……”
I needed to go through a planning process to see if I wanted to do it (the Business) again. In the end I had been doing it too long and was ready to go.
“Coaching was a clarification exercise”
“there must be a lot of people out there where its (their business) has become a habit and are frightened to make the next decision as what they would do- stuck in staying in what we do.”
Was Coaching Financially worthwhile?
“I got the outcome I wanted and if you weigh up the cost of continuing in the direction I was going in, then the coaching is not expensive. It is expensive, but if you are making a lot of costly mistakes then it’s not costly.
“I see a lot of businesses that are very profitable, but are very inefficient so they don’t go anywhere. I know they should be making money because they are flat out.”
“They have just grown into the role and are not managing it. No trouble getting the work. But in the end just inefficient or lose control of the finances.”
“A business coach was like engaging an independent umpire. Deep down I knew the things I needed to do but was never going to make any real decisions until I heard it from someone else who was able to provide me with impartial judgements.”

Three years ago my husband and I were struggling with stress under high debt and long working hours. Another friend suggested we try business coaching through Jim Boyer as it had helped him with his own business. We spent just over a year consulting with Jim and made some large and substantial changes during and after that time. Our biggest issues revolved around debt, time management, employees and our own personal relationship as husband and wife.
When we dealt with each of these issues the first thing we worked on was our own personal relationship. Jim helped us identify our own personal strengths and weaknesses both as self-employed individuals and on a more personal relationship based level. By recognising our differences (and there were many), we were able to better deal with the business problems facing us and we learnt the art of compromise!
Debt was probably our biggest issue and it caused many disagreements between my husband and myself. Jim helped us focus on what we wanted to achieve both in the near term and long term. We both agreed that debt reduction was one of our highest priorities and Jim helped us uncover what options we had to get our debt to a more manageable level. After instigating a number of changes we got our debt down to a position with which we were both comfortable and could manage without watching our business fail through crippling debt. It required thinking outside the “bank” box and looking at other options available to us, such as selling some assets to recover.
This was another big hurdle to overcome and it is still one we work on, on a daily basis. I have always been a fairly good time manager and I felt my husband needed to adopt my own methods to get things achieved and prioritised. But through Jim’s program it became clear that the way I managed my time would not work for my husband. His issues and priorities were different to my own and what worked for me would not work for him. However, Jim was able to help my husband clarify what issues and priorities were important to him and help him uncover the best ways to deal with them. Spending time with our children was always hard and we still work on it daily, but are aware that the demands of our business sometimes get in the way of being available for our children. As such, we always make sure that the time we do spend with them is quality time and try not to let the pressures we are under running the business affect our personal relationship with our children and each other. We often confused the lines between “business” time and “family” time before working with Jim, but we now have clear lines between the two and fully recognise that sometimes our children and each other must come first. It is still a learning curve, but one we now get pleasure from rather than pain.
In our business employees are always a problem, both finding good employees and keeping them. It wasn’t until last year, that we took steps to rectify our employee issues and now we have a trainee who is learning the business slowly and in time will hopefully be a valuable member of our team, but in the short term, he relieves some of the everyday pressures that my husband faces. We downsized our employee base and changed how and who we employed to make things both financially and practically better. Jim also helped us recognise the difference between being “friends” with our employees and being “friendly”. There is a line in an employer/employee relationship and it should never be crossed. We found that out the hard way and when we took on our new employee our boundaries and what we expected from him were very clear.
I touched briefly on our personal relationship earlier and will expand a little now. Before we retained Jim’s services our marital relationship was not in great shape. This was mainly because neither of us was able to recognise the other’s difficulties and challenges. Once Jim helped us recognise our mental and emotional differences we were able to better understand where each of us was “at”. I see and deal with things very differently to my husband and now I am aware of his personality type and working type I am able to work “with” him to achieve mutual business goals. It goes without saying that in doing so, our personal relationship has improved and we are better friends than before as well as being better business partners. Spending time together as a family is still challenging as our business is a 365 day a year business, but we do make time for each other and the children and recently spent a nice three weeks overseas as a family with business and its issues a long way away! And while we had problems to deal with when we came home, we did so without “world ending” thoughts! The holiday was priceless and the moments shared were special. It would be nice to have more time to spend with our children, but those “big” moments more than make up for it. We recognise that our business puts limitations on our ability to have “weekends off” like other 9-5 businesses but when we do spend time together it is real, genuine quality time.

My wife Jolanda and I had the pleasure of Jim’s coaching for 4 months this year. I never really considered using the services of a business coach at all, but after working with Jim I am happy that I have.
We were trying to grow our business and expand somehow, but we were not quite sure what direction to go in. After our sessions with Jim, however, we now have a direction and path to follow. Many things came up while talking with Jim, things that were both unexpected and surprising. I sometimes wonder what the heck we were going to talk about for an hour, but something interesting always came up. Quite honestly, we could have almost always spent more than an hour in his sessions!
The thing about Jim is that he never tells you what you should or shouldn’t do, he asks questions and you answer them. As you answer you learn something about yourself and your business, and you come away with a clear head. He is the probing, and sometimes critical, independent voice that will help show you direction in your business.
Jim can help you with any problem, from how to handle difficult clients, to how to keep you stock costs down, and much more. Of course there may not always be a problem…….you may just need guidance. He is a man with vast experience in business coaching, and I highly recommend Jim to any person looking to improve their business……and yes even your life!

A cohesive team
Thank you Jim for your quality coaching, and for showing us how to approach our problems in a different way. Although we had a very good and systemized business we found that the communication between our three managers was not effective, and rather than working as one business we had three people doing their own thing.
The DISC profiles to give the team an understanding of themselves and each other. The result is a cohesive team that is more accepting. They now understand their own limitations and they understand and respect each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Every section is still its own store, but all managers are on same page, making communication to floor staff much easier and consistent. Having a better management system, it’s easier to bring floor staff along with what is required.
Any question in the workshop can now be answered by a number of people to give a consistent result. In conclusion the better communication that we created has linked all our departments together like three small businesses, they are all focused on the overall business: value for money accident repairs processed efficiently.
