That would sure be nice wouldn’t it? So what does work to achieve this? Yes, there is a business improvement technique that consistently works, sports stars have been using it for years, it’s totally accepted as the only way to achieve peak performance in sport, its called coaching.
So why does coaching work? Olympic swimmers know how to swim fast, but would they consider doing an Olympic campaign without a coach? Surely not! An Olympic weight lifting Coach may never lift a weight, yet that is the person right beside the athlete at the victory press conference. Even the local U16 football team has a coach. The success of the team is a reflection of the coach and the captain just as much as it is the skill of the players. Does a coach teach the swimmer to swim- not usually, but the coach does bring in new techniques and knowledge, does insist the swimmer comes to training, and offers encouragement and support. The coach also offers an individual touch that keys in with the athletes individual strengths and weaknesses. The coach keeps the athlete on track to their goals.
Yet in business we have few coaches. Could you tell if a business is coached?- Absolutely. If you know of a business that has had an unexpected change for the better, or become more high profile, or just seems really organized; chances are they have used a coach. Is the difference significant? Yes, just as a coached athlete will beat an untrained opponent, a coached business will beat an un-coached business in the game of business.

There are many other types of support are there for business as a coach I encourage you to use as many of these as you can: Books: The bookstores of the world are full of books that help us be successful. For 29.95 you can have the success secrets of almost any famous business guru. I help my clients understand and apply this information in their business. I have a reading list I recommend to my clients as they need further information. Success seminars: These are great, you float out on cloud nine- a week later most people have forgotten all about it, only that small percentage who take immediate and decisive action gained benefit. With the help of a coach these ideas are taken and implemented while they are still fresh. e-books and internet articles The internet is a great source of information, and lots of god (and some no so good) are available. I find it a great way to research particular issues that we are addressing and a great pointer to further information. Magazines: too have lots of great ideas, and the careful selection of which articles to read results in some real gems. Franchise Systems: There is little doubt that a good franchise system is the literal licence to print money. Others are less perfect and the owner needs to fill in the gaps. Coaching is one way to fill in the gaps, and make sure you are getting the most you can from the franchise system, ensuring your business meets its potential. Friends & family etc. These can be fantastic, they can also put their own views forward which may actually be less than well considered and often they are not experienced in business. Working with a coach enables the gold to be sorted from the stones and implemented in your business. Mentor. Using a coach is a great way to enhance your mentor relationship. The issue with the ideas and wisdom your mentor brings forward is that with all the pressures of running the business you often don’t get around to actually implementing them. Your coach makes the difference so you can carry out these new ideas. Tapes & CD’s, these are a fantastic tool to increase your knowledge on any topic. I recommend these for any business person as they can be played in the car and often have practical and simple strategies you can implement immediately. Working with a coach the strategies can be a topic of discussion and faster learning.
