David Richmond is an accountant, he is also on the board of the Bendigo Business Council. He asked “Jim you keep renewing your membership year after year, what keeps you coming back.”
I thought a bit; “its the social side, the networking and contacts aren’t that successful for me.”
“So what is needed” David asked?- Good Question!
I recalled that when I was building my businesses I took every opportunity to attend events where I could learn something. The strategy served me well, my businesses were successful and I’m now in the fortunate position of working because I want to rather than I have to.
What do I think our business community needs from the BBC?
- Structured networking so we meet people and find out about each others businesses.
- A short sharp learning session (not a sales pitch) so we all go home a little wiser in our business practices.
The challenge for the business council is connect with that majority of business owners who see no need to learn more than they know, and cannot understand how connecting with other business people will help them. It’s a shame as these same people are the ones who don’t have a business, just a job working for the worlds worst boss– themselves.
Formula for success:
- Knowledge through private learning
- Knowledge from seminars
- A group of like minded people to swap ideas and strategies with.
